Captured sometime between 1960 and 1969, this striking photograph by Cliff Segerblom (1915–1990) shows Frazier Hall (left) and Grant Hall at what was then Nevada Southern University — now UNLV.

Through Segerblom’s lens, we see the beginnings of a university still surrounded by open desert and framed by the distant Spring Mountains. His composition captures not just buildings, but the optimism of growth — a quiet moment before Las Vegas became the metropolis we know today.

This photograph, preserved in the UNLV Special Collections & Archives, reflects Segerblom’s lifelong devotion to documenting Nevada’s evolving identity — from the building of Hoover Dam to the rise of its cultural and educational landmarks.

Every so often, a discovery reveals an entirely ne Every so often, a discovery reveals an entirely new facet of an artist’s legacy. Folies Dancer (1960) is one of those rare finds — a watercolor by Cliff Segerblom (1915–1990) that departs from his signature landscapes to celebrate the elegance, grace, and strength of the Las Vegas showgirl.

Known primarily as a visual documentarian of Nevada’s evolution — from Hoover Dam to the rise of Las Vegas — Segerblom rarely painted portraits. That’s what makes this piece so extraordinary. It captures the artistry of movement, the poise of performance, and the timeless allure of the women who helped define an era.

This painting carries remarkable provenance, having been lovingly preserved in a private collection for decades. Its rediscovery arrives at a serendipitous moment — just as Taylor Swift’s chart-topping film and album “Life of a Showgirl” reintroduce the world to the beauty, discipline, and legacy of the showgirl.
Because while times change, the showgirl never truly left — she simply waited for the spotlight to turn her way again.

If you own a work by Cliff Segerblom or would like assistance in verifying its authenticity, the Cliff Segerblom Legacy Project is here to help. Together, we preserve Nevada’s artistic and cultural heritage, one story at a time.

In the stillness of this frame lies a story of tra In the stillness of this frame lies a story of transformation — of light, desert, and human ambition.

This photograph was featured in Nevada: The Photography of Cliff Segerblom, a major exhibition presented at the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas, located at the Springs Preserve.

Organized in partnership with the Nevada Arts Council and supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the exhibition celebrated the extraordinary life and vision of Cliff Segerblom (1915–1990) — a pioneering Nevada artist and photographer whose lens captured the evolving landscapes of the American West.

Segerblom began his career with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, documenting the construction of Hoover Dam and other large-scale infrastructure projects that defined the 20th century. His photographs of needle valves, spillways, turbines, and desert machinery reflect a rare balance of engineering precision and poetic observation.

Over the following four decades, he chronicled Nevada’s transformation — from its remote mining towns and ghost settlements to its expanding urban centers and vast desert horizons. His work reveals a transitional era when the state’s wilderness was being redefined by progress, ingenuity, and vision.

The exhibition, drawn from the extensive Segerblom Family Collection and the archives of the Nevada State Museum, presented more than four decades of his work — thousands of negatives, prints, and slides that together form one of the most comprehensive visual histories of Nevada ever created.

Today, the Cliff Segerblom Legacy Project continues to preserve and share this remarkable body of work, ensuring that Segerblom’s artistic and historical contributions remain accessible to future generations. Plans are currently underway for future exhibitions that will further explore his photographic and painterly legacy, highlighting Nevada’s unique place in the story of the American West.

His art continues to remind us that the intersection of nature, technology, and vision is not only where history unfolds — it’s where art begins.

“It has a serene nature to it, so calming… even the clouds aren’t taking themselves too seriously. It shows a tranquil contrast to our Southern Nevada lifestyle that not many visitors get to experience.”

Segerblom’s ability to capture the essence of Nevada’s landscape reminds us of the quiet beauty that surrounds Las Vegas, beyond the neon lights.
