The story behind this exquisite watercolor is unforgettable. It’s a composite of rural and ghost towns across Nevada, painted by Cliff Segerblom at the request of @ticksegerblom to honor Senator Harry Reid at a Democratic Party fundraising dinner. The original was gifted to Reid, who carried it to the airport that night and flew it to DC. But in a twist of fate, when he hailed a taxi at the curb, he accidentally left the painting on the sidewalk—never to be seen again.
Thankfully, Cliff had taken a photo of it, preserving this beautiful piece of Nevada history.

In 1969, the U.S. Navy commissioned Nevada artist

In 1969, the U.S. Navy commissioned Nevada artist Cliff Segerblom to document one of the most significant moments in space exploration history: the splashdown of Apollo 12. The artwork, part of a larger tradition of Navy-commissioned pieces dating back to World War I, captures the pivotal moments of the mission and the critical role of the USS Hornet, which recovered the Apollo 12 astronauts.

This detailed sketch, created using felt tip pen, show both the USS Hornet used during the recovery. Segerblom's work is a testament to the close collaboration between the Navy and NASA, marking a moment when the sea met the stars.

The exhibition, Along the Colorado, curated by Nevada artist Sapira Cheuk, includes paintings, mixed media, and video works that explore the water crisis faced by the desert Southwest, the nation, and the planet. On August 16, 2021, the United States Bureau of Reclamation declared the first-ever official water shortage for the Colorado River Basin. For the seven states along the Colorado River, this has meant new and increased water use restrictions and evolving interstate relationships, not only to the river, but also between each other. Along the Colorado includes artists, scientists, and advocates from Colorado River Basin states whose works explore the scarcity, commodification, conservation, legality, and politics of water use. Along the Colorado features the following contributors: Jess Benjamin, John Fleck, Alexander Heilner, Patrick Kikut, Michael B. Mason, Dr. Thomas Minckley, Cody Perry, Kyle Roerink, Sean D. Russell, Cliff Segerblom, Jen Urso, and Marc Wise.

This exhibition took place on August 4 - September 28, 2022 at Nevada Humanities Program Gallery
